Internet authentication is now required in all University networks.

Traffic into and out of the University network in Mb/s.
This picture is downloaded from a site outside of the University, and will therefore require authentication.

Edith Cowan University spends a significant amount of money each year on Internet traffic.

Authentication allows traffic to be associated with an individual, and therefore with a Faculty/Centre, School/Branch and effectively a Cost Centre.  Reports are being developed to ensure that the University is able to manage this traffic, and to ensure that usage is appropriate.  Internet traffic is not free, and the charges are listed on the following website.

If you are having difficulties connecting to websites outside of the University contact the Helpdesk.  Further information can be obtained from the following .pdf files.

General principles:

In order to improve the management of this cost, the University has set a policy in place which requires traffic to be associated with a school, unit or individual.  In turn, costs associated with traffic may be associated with a school, unit or individual.

Some general principles have been established:

  1. The Internet should only be used for Teaching, Learning, Research and/or Administration;
  2. The University should offer the most generous levels of Internet traffic and costs within the State;
  3. The University should fund appropriate levels of Internet use based upon student enrolment;
  4. The University should allow students to pay for “over and above” Internet traffic – and at the same rate that the University is charged for its traffic; and
  5. These policies apply to both staff and students of the University.
